IGiG scientific seminar - Dr. André Skupin
06-12-2023
IGiG is pleased to invite you to a scientific seminar to be held in the IGIG library (100G) on December 14, 2023 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. The presentation, entitled "Transparency and the Future of Artificial Intelligence: Spatial Perspectives," will be given by Dr. André Skupin from San Diego State University. Dr. Skupin conducts innovative research in the field of knowledge analytics, and his research and development efforts have aimed at fusing AI-related approaches from machine learning with natural language processing and semantic computing. The speaker will personally give a presentation at our Institute as part of a several-day research visit. After the meeting, please join us for coffee and refreshments.

Inauguration of the DigiTwins4PEDs Project: Creating Positive Energy Districts Together with Citizens
05-12-2023

In November, we officially began work on another innovative project, DigiTwins4PEDs, which aims to bring optimization to urban energy transformation. The project, entitled Utilization of urban digital twins to co-create flexible positive energy systems for districts, brings together teams from different regions determined to accelerate change for sustainable energy. The consortium consists of ten partners from Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Austria, including universities, research units, business partners and representatives of the cities that have been selected as test areas - Wroclaw, Vienna, Stuttgart and Rotterdam. The project will be implemented at the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences for 2.5 years under the leadership of Dr Paweł Boguslawski, in close cooperation with Wroclaw business partner infoSolutions. The total budget of the project is over 1.5 million EUR, and the funding provided for UPWr is at the level of 224.000 EUR.

Damian Tondaś with the PhD degree
23-11-2023
On 9 November 2023, the Scientific Council of the Discipline of Civil Engineering, Geodesy, and Transportation at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences adopted a resolution on awarding the Ph.D. degree to Damian Tondaś. The resolution was accepted based on the doctoral thesis entitled "Integration of GNSS and InSAR observations for monitoring deformations in mining areas", supervised by prof. Witold Rohm and dr. Jan Kapłon, assoc. prof. (UPWr). The doctoral work consists of a series of three scientific publications, in which candidate presented, a.o., a new methodology for estimating GNSS observations in the ultra-fast NRT mode, an accuracy analysis of ground displacement monitoring in relation to different computational methods of GNSS observations, as well as a new methodology of integration GNSS and InSAR data in the context of investigating deformations in mining areas. During the PhD studies, Damian Tondaś carried out his scientific work within the EPOS-PL and EPOS-PL+ projects, also completing three abroad internships: one at the University of New Brunswick (Canada) within the NAWA programme and two internships at the Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) financed by the GATHERS project and the WZB SpaceOs funds. Both the Reviewers and the Scientific Council of the Discipline highly complimented the scientific achievements of the doctoral candidate, awarding her thesis with honors. Congratulations!

GNSS-Seismology Doctorate defended by Iwona Kudłacik
16-11-2023
On October 26, 2023, the Scientific Council of the Discipline of Civil Engineering, Geodesy, and Transportation at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences awarded the doctoral degree to Iwona Kudłacik based on her doctoral thesis titled "Research on natural and anthropogenic seismicity with high-frequency GNSS observations." The thesis was supervised by Dr. Jan Kapłon, Assoc. Prof. (UPWr), and Dr. Grzegorz Lizurek, Assoc. Prof. (IGF PAN). The doctoral work consists of a series of four scientific publications in which the candidate presented procedures for analyzing high-rate GNSS time series to detect low-magnitude anthropogenic earthquakes. The application of such data for mining-induced seismic events extends the current applications of GNSS seismology, which primarily involve monitoring large natural earthquakes or bridge vibrations.
Iwona Kudłacik is involved in the EPOS-PL, EPOS-PL+, and GATHERS projects, and since 2019, she has been collaborating with Professor Mattia Crespi and his team at Sapienza University of Rome, where she completed two internships.
Both the Reviewers and the Scientific Council of the Discipline highly complimented the scientific achievements of the doctoral candidate, awarding her thesis with honors. Congratulations!
